Hydrangea Tardiva

Hydrangea paniculata 'Tardiva' is a vigorous, deciduous shrub known for its large, upright clusters of creamy white flowers that appear later in the season-from late summer into early autumn. The lacy, conical flower heads are held on strong stems above dark green foliage, often taking on soft pink tones as they age. With an open, upright habit reaching 2-3 metres high and 1.5-2 metres wide, it adds late-season interest and structure to cottage, woodland, and mixed border garden styles.

Plant in full sun to partial shade with moist, free-draining, humus-rich soil. Space plants 1.5-2 metres apart to allow for mature growth and airflow. Prune in late winter or early spring to encourage strong new flowering stems, as this variety flowers on current season’s growth. Water during dry periods and mulch annually to conserve moisture and enrich the soil. Hardy and low-maintenance once established.

Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth appears. Cut back previous season’s growth by about one-third to shape the plant and encourage larger flower heads, as this variety flowers on new wood.

Deadheading: Remove spent flower heads after blooming to tidy the plant. This also helps prevent unnecessary energy going into seed production.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In poor soils, a second application in mid-summer can support strong growth and flowering.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment and dry periods. Hydrangea ‘Tardiva’ prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil-mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, spider mites, and scale insects. Treat infestations early with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Disease Management: Ensure good airflow around the plant to reduce the risk of powdery mildew and leaf spot. Avoid overhead watering and remove any yellowing or diseased foliage promptly. Plant in free-draining soil to prevent root rot.
