Hydrangea Magic Pillow

Producing clusters of rich pink or blue flowers-depending on soil pH-it blooms from late spring through summer, creating a colourful display perfect for the front of borders, edging, or container plantings. With a tidy, spreading habit reaching around 30-40 cm high and 50-60 cm wide, it suits cottage, woodland, and courtyard garden styles.
Plant in partial shade with moist, well-draining, humus-rich soil. For blue flowers, maintain acidic soil; for pink, keep soil more alkaline. Space plants 40-50 cm apart to allow for spread and airflow. Water regularly during dry spells and mulch annually to retain moisture. Prune lightly after flowering if needed, avoiding hard cuts into old wood. Protect from harsh afternoon sun and frost in colder regions.
Trimming: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged wood and shape the plant. Avoid heavy pruning, as this variety flowers on old wood-cutting back too hard may reduce flowering.
Deadheading: Remove spent flower heads after flowering to tidy the plant. In cooler areas, consider leaving dried blooms over winter to protect developing buds, cutting them back in early spring instead.
Fertilising: Apply a slow-release, balanced fertiliser in early spring. For stronger flowering, use a high-potassium fertiliser. In alkaline soils, apply an acidifying fertiliser if aiming for bluer tones (if colour variation is desired).
Watering: Water deeply and regularly, especially during dry periods. Hydrangea ‘Magic Pillow’ prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out, particularly during flowering.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids, spider mites, and scale insects. Treat infestations early with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Disease Management: Ensure good airflow and avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and leaf spot. Remove any diseased foliage promptly and ensure the plant is not overcrowded. Use mulch to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it clear of the base.
