Hibiscus Sun Showers
Notify MeHibiscus rosa-sinensis Sun Showers is a striking evergreen shrub featuring large, ruffled golden-yellow flowers with a soft orange to pink blush and a deep red centre. Flowering from spring through to autumn, it brings vibrant, warm colour to tropical borders, feature planting, or large containers.
Plant in full sun with rich, free-draining soil. Water regularly and feed during the growing season to encourage continuous flowering. Protect from frost and cold winds. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and promote new growth. Space plants 1 to 1.5 metres apart for hedging or individual display.
Grows to around 2 to 3 metres tall and 1.5 to 2 metres wide.
Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the plant and encourage vigorous new growth. Light trimming after flowering helps maintain a compact form and supports repeat flowering throughout the season.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage continuous flowering and keep the plant looking tidy.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. For best results, feed every two to four weeks during the flowering season with a high-potassium liquid fertiliser to enhance blooming.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and in dry conditions. Maintain evenly moist but well-drained soil. Avoid overwatering or allowing the soil to dry out completely.
Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, whiteflies, and spider mites on new growth. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.
Disease Management: Ensure good airflow and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal diseases such as leaf spot. Remove any discoloured or damaged foliage and use free-draining soil to prevent root rot.
