Hibiscus rosa-sinensis Suva Queen

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis Suva Queen is a tropical evergreen shrub known for its large, ruffled pink flowers with a prominent red centre that deepens toward the throat. Flowering from spring through to autumn, it adds a classic tropical look to warm borders, feature planting, or large containers.

Plant in full sun with rich, free-draining soil. Water regularly and feed throughout the growing season to support flowering. Protect from frost and cold winds. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and encourage fresh growth. Space plants 1 to 1.5 metres apart for best effect.

Grows to around 2 to 3 metres tall and 1.5 to 2 metres wide.

Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain a compact shape and stimulate fresh growth. Lightly trim after flowering to tidy the plant and support repeat flowering.

Deadheading: Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage continuous flowering and improve the plant’s appearance.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. For best flowering, feed every two to four weeks during the growing season with a high-potassium liquid fertiliser.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment and in warm, dry conditions. Keep the soil evenly moist but well drained. Avoid waterlogging and prolonged dry periods.

Pest Control: Watch for aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies, particularly on young growth. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Disease Management: Ensure good airflow and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal issues such as leaf spot. Remove any yellowing or affected foliage promptly and use free-draining soil to help prevent root rot.
