Hibiscus rosa-sinensis Lambertii
Notify MeHibiscus rosa-sinensis Lambertii is a tropical evergreen shrub featuring large, rich dark red flowers with gently ruffled petals and a deep red centre. Flowering from spring through to autumn, it brings subtle yet striking colour to warm borders, feature planting, or large containers.
Plant in full sun with rich, free-draining soil. Water regularly and feed throughout the growing season to encourage continuous flowering. Protect from frost and cold winds. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and promote new growth. Space plants 1 to 1.5 metres apart for best display.
Grows to around 2 to 3 metres tall and 1.5 to 2 metres wide.
Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain a compact shape and encourage vigorous new growth. Light trimming after flowering helps support ongoing flowering and tidy growth.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers regularly to promote continuous flowering and improve the plant’s overall appearance.
Fertilising: Use a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. For best results, supplement with a high-potassium liquid feed every two to four weeks during the flowering season.
Watering: Water consistently during establishment and throughout dry periods. Keep the soil evenly moist but well drained. Avoid both waterlogging and allowing the soil to dry out completely.
Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies, particularly on tender new growth. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Disease Management: Ensure good airflow and avoid overhead watering to minimise fungal issues such as leaf spot. Use free-draining soil and remove any yellowing or diseased leaves to maintain overall plant health.
