Hibiscus rosa-sinensis Isobel Beard
Notify MeHibiscus rosa-sinensis Isobel Beard is a showy evergreen shrub featuring large, soft apricot-pink flowers with gently ruffled petals and a subtle red centre. Flowering from spring through to autumn, it brings a warm, tropical feel to borders, feature plantings, and large containers in sheltered gardens.
Plant in full sun with rich, free-draining soil. Water regularly and feed during the growing season to support healthy growth and flowering. Protect from frost and cold winds. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and encourage new growth. Space plants 1 to 1.5 metres apart for hedging or specimen use.
Grows to around 2 to 3 metres tall and 1.5 to 2 metres wide.
Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the plant and promote strong new growth. Lightly trim after flowering to maintain a compact habit and encourage further flowering.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers regularly to support continuous flowering and keep the plant looking tidy.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. During the flowering season, feed every two to four weeks with a high-potassium liquid fertiliser to encourage vibrant blooms and healthy foliage.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and dry periods. Maintain evenly moist but well-drained soil. Avoid both overwatering and allowing the soil to dry out completely.
Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies, especially on soft new growth. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary.
Disease Management: Ensure good airflow and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal diseases such as leaf spot. Use free-draining soil and remove any discoloured or damaged leaves to maintain plant health.
