Hibiscus rosa-sinensis Black Beauty
Notify MeHibiscus rosa-sinensis Black Beauty is a striking evergreen shrub featuring large, velvety deep red to burgundy flowers with a darker centre, flowering from spring through to autumn. Its dramatic colour and glossy green foliage make it ideal for feature planting, subtropical borders, or large containers in warm, sheltered spaces.
Plant in full sun with rich, free-draining soil. Water regularly and feed during the growing season to promote continuous flowering. Protect from frost and cold winds. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and encourage fresh growth. Space plants 1 to 1.5 metres apart for hedging or as individual specimens.
Grows to around 2 to 3 metres tall and 1.5 to 2 metres wide.
Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain a compact shape and stimulate fresh growth. Light trimming after flowering can help promote additional buds and keep the plant tidy.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage ongoing flowering and improve appearance.
Fertilising: Use a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Supplement with a high-potassium liquid feed every two to four weeks during the flowering season for best results.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and in warm, dry weather. Keep the soil consistently moist but well drained. Avoid both soggy conditions and complete drying out.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids, whiteflies, and spider mites, especially on soft new growth. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary.
Disease Management: Provide good airflow and avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal diseases such as leaf spot. Remove any yellowing or spotted leaves promptly and ensure the plant is in well-drained soil to reduce root issues.
