Grevillea Aussie Crawl is a low-spreading evergreen shrub grown for its burgundy-red to dark red toothbrush-style flowers. It blooms heavily in winter and spring, with flushes continuing through much of the year in mild regions. The plant grows to around 0.3 to 0.5m high and spreads 2 to 3m wide, making it a useful groundcover for open garden spaces.
This grevillea suits a coastal garden, a low-water modern planting, or a native-style bed. Use it to cover banks and slopes, suppress weeds, or fill large areas with minimal upkeep. It pairs well with other prostrate grevilleas, lomandras, and ornamental grasses for a textured, water-wise planting.
Grow Aussie Crawl in full sun and free-draining soil. It tolerates sandy or gravelly ground and dislikes heavy, wet conditions. Good airflow around the plant keeps it healthy. It handles coastal winds and dry summers well once established, and has reasonable frost tolerance in most NZ regions.
Trim lightly after the main flowering period to keep the spread in check and encourage fresh growth. Pet toxicity for grevilleas is not clearly established. As a precaution, keep pets from chewing the foliage and contact your vet if ingestion occurs.
Trimming: Trim lightly after the main winter to spring flowering flush to control spread and encourage compact new growth. Avoid cutting back into old bare wood, as grevilleas can be slow to reshoot from hard pruning.
Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. Spent flower clusters can be removed to tidy the plant, but leaving them does no harm and they often attract birds.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a low-phosphorus native or protea-specific fertiliser. Grevilleas are sensitive to phosphorus and do not need rich soil. Feed sparingly and avoid standard garden fertilisers.
Watering: Water regularly through the first season to establish a strong root system. Once established, this grevillea is drought-tolerant and needs watering only during long dry spells.
Pest Control: Grevilleas are generally hardy plants. Watch for scale insects and aphids on new growth, and treat early with horticultural oil if numbers build.
Disease Management: Free-draining soil is the main defence against problems. Wet or heavy soil invites Phytophthora root rot, which is the most common cause of grevillea decline. Keep the root zone open and avoid overwatering.
