Gardenia True Love

Gardenia 'True Love' is a compact, evergreen shrub treasured for its beautifully formed, creamy white double flowers with an intense, sweet fragrance. Blooming from late spring through summer, the flowers sit among glossy, deep green foliage, making it a standout feature in both garden beds and containers. With a rounded, bushy habit reaching around 1-1.2 metres high and wide, it’s well-suited to subtropical, cottage, and scented garden styles.

Plant in full sun to partial shade with free-draining, acidic, humus-rich soil. Shelter from frost, cold winds, and intense afternoon sun in hotter regions. Space plants 80-100 cm apart for borders or low hedging. Keep soil consistently moist and feed regularly with a fertiliser for acid-loving plants. Mulch annually to conserve moisture and enrich the soil. Lightly prune after flowering to shape and encourage fresh growth.

Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to shape the plant and encourage dense, bushy growth. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Avoid hard pruning, as it may reduce flowering the following season.

Deadheading: Regularly remove spent blooms to encourage continuous flowering and maintain a neat appearance.

Fertilising: Feed every 4-6 weeks during the growing season with a fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants. A high-potassium fertiliser will promote flowering, while maintaining soil acidity is essential for overall plant health.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but free-draining. Avoid waterlogging or letting the soil dry out completely. Mulch to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

Pest Control: Monitor for common pests such as aphids, mealybugs, scale, and whiteflies. Treat early with insecticidal soap or neem oil to prevent damage and sooty mould.

Disease Management: Ensure good airflow to prevent fungal issues like powdery mildew and sooty mould. Avoid overhead watering, and remove any diseased or yellowing foliage promptly. Use acidic, well-drained soil to prevent root rot and nutrient deficiencies.
