Gardenia augusta Golden Magic

Gardenia augusta 'Golden Magic' is a compact, evergreen shrub admired for its highly fragrant flowers and glossy green foliage. The creamy white, double flowers gradually age to a rich golden yellow, creating a beautiful multi-toned display on the plant from late spring through to autumn. With a rounded, bushy habit reaching around 1-1.2 metres high and wide, it’s ideal for subtropical, cottage, and scented garden styles, as well as containers and sheltered courtyards.

Plant in full sun to partial shade with free-draining, acidic, humus-rich soil. Protect from frost and cold winds. Space plants 80-100 cm apart to allow for mature growth and airflow. Water regularly during dry periods and feed with a fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants. Mulch annually to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape.

Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a compact shape and encourage bushy growth. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches as needed. Avoid heavy pruning, as this can reduce flowering.

Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming and improve appearance. This also helps the plant direct energy into new growth rather than seed production.

Fertilising: Feed every 4-6 weeks during the growing season with a fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants. A high-potassium feed will help promote flowering, while maintaining soil acidity is key to overall health.

Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during flowering and hot weather. Avoid waterlogging by ensuring free drainage, and use mulch to help retain soil moisture and maintain even soil temperature.

Pest Control: Monitor for common pests such as aphids, scale insects, mealybugs, and whiteflies. Treat infestations promptly with neem oil or insecticidal soap.

Disease Management: Provide good airflow to prevent fungal diseases like sooty mould and root rot. Avoid overhead watering and water at the base of the plant. Use well-drained, acidic soil and remove any yellowing or diseased foliage promptly. Chlorosis (yellowing leaves with green veins) may occur in alkaline soils-treat with iron chelates if necessary.
