Euonymus fortunei minimus

Euonymus fortunei minimus, commonly known as dwarf wintercreeper, is a low-growing evergreen shrub appreciated for its small, glossy green leaves that create a dense, mat-like ground cover. Inconspicuous pale green-yellow flowers appear in summer, occasionally followed by red-pink fruit. This versatile plant is known for its resilience and ability to provide year-round colour and texture in the garden.

Ideal for use as ground cover, in rock gardens, or as an edging plant. It thrives in a variety of garden styles, including formal, woodland, and contemporary gardens. This hardy plant prefers full sun to partial shade and is adaptable to a range of soil types, provided they are well-drained. Space plants about 30 to 45 cm apart to allow them to spread and form a cohesive cover.

Typically reaches a mature height of 10 to 15 cm with a spread of 30 to 60 cm.

Trimming: Trim Euonymus fortunei Minimus in late winter or early spring to maintain its shape and control its size. Remove any dead, damaged, or overgrown branches to encourage new growth.

Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to support healthy growth. If the soil is poor, a second application in midsummer can help maintain vigour.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase, ensuring the soil is consistently moist but well-drained. Once established, Euonymus fortunei Minimus is relatively drought-tolerant but will benefit from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods.

Pest Control: Monitor for common pests such as aphids, spider mites, and scale insects. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Ensure good air circulation to help prevent pest problems.

Disease Management: Watch for signs of fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and root rot. Improve air circulation and avoid overhead watering to minimise the risk. Remove affected parts and apply a fungicide if necessary to control disease spread. Ensure the soil has good drainage to prevent root rot.
