Diosma ericoides is a compact, evergreen shrub with fine, aromatic foliage and masses of small pink to white star-like flowers from late winter through to spring. Its soft texture and tidy form make it a popular choice for borders, cottage gardens, and low-maintenance planting schemes.
Plant in full sun with free-draining soil. Tolerates light frost and dry conditions once established. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage dense growth. Space plants 50 to 60 centimetres apart for hedging or grouped planting.
Grows to around 60 to 80 centimetres tall and wide.
Trimming: Lightly trim after flowering to maintain a compact, bushy shape. Avoid cutting into old wood, as this may reduce regrowth.
Deadheading: Not essential, but removing spent flower clusters can help keep the plant tidy and may encourage light repeat flowering.
Fertilising: Apply a low-phosphorus, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. A light top-up in late summer can be beneficial, especially in sandy or nutrient-poor soils.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering during extended dry periods.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Occasionally monitor for aphids or scale, especially on soft new growth. Treat with insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Rarely troubled by disease. Ensure well-drained soil to prevent root rot and remove any discoloured or damaged foliage to maintain plant health. Good airflow will help prevent fungal issues.
