Cotoneaster Royal Beauty
Cotoneaster dammerii Royal Beauty is a stunning fast growing, low lying evergreen shrub. It has graceful arching branches that root as they touch the ground. In spring, it produces small, pinkish-white flowers that attract pollinators, followed by an abundance of berries that provide autumn and winter interest and food for the birds.
Cotoneaster Royal Beauty is suitable for cottage, wildlife, and formal gardens. It can be used in mixed borders, as a ground cover, or as a cascading feature over walls and slopes. This hardy, low-maintenance plant thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil with moderate moisture.
For optimal growth, space the plants about 1.5m apart, allowing them room to spread. At maturity, this shrub reaches a height of about 30cm to 1m and a spread of approximately 2m.
Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and remove any dead or damaged branches. Lightly trim after flowering to encourage a tidy growth habit.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. Avoid excessive fertilisation to prevent weak, leggy growth.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and during prolonged dry periods. Once established, Cotoneaster Royal Beauty is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering.
Pest Control: Monitor for common pests such as aphids and spider mites. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil, ensuring thorough coverage.
Disease Management: Watch for signs of fire blight and powdery mildew. Remove and dispose of any affected plant parts to prevent the spread of disease. Ensure good air circulation around the plant and apply appropriate fungicides if necessary.
