Cotoneaster congestus
Cotoneaster congestus is a compact, evergreen shrub known for its dense, upright branching and small, glossy dark green leaves. In spring, it produces clusters of tiny white flowers, followed by vibrant red berries in autumn that often persist into winter, providing seasonal interest and food for birds. Typically reaching 60-90 cm high and wide, it is well-suited for low hedging, borders, rock gardens, or coastal and wildlife-friendly garden styles.
Plant in full sun to partial shade with free-draining soil. Space plants 50-60 cm apart for hedging or grouped plantings. Drought-tolerant and low-maintenance once established. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to shape or maintain density. Avoid overly wet conditions. A reliable, hardy shrub that provides structure, colour, and ecological value year-round.
