Cornus Flaviramea

Cornus stolonifera Flaviramea, commonly known as the Yellow Twig Dogwood, is a fast-growing, suckering shrub known for its bright-yellow stems in winter. Perfect for brightening up a winter landscape, it is a hardy plant that can withstand colder temperatures and is resistant to common diseases.

It makes an effective mixed border plant as its unique structure and colouring provide a striking contrast when planted with rounded evergreen shrubs in particular. It is mostly used in traditional style gardens but is increasingly being used in modern gardens in hedges or in mass plantings.

It is tolerant of most growing conditions, including the very wet, but prefers well-drained soil and full sun exposure to bring out its most vibrant yellow. Can grow to a height of 2.5m and a spread of 1m but should be trimmed back each year to encourage new growth.

Trimming: Trim Cornus flaviramea in late winter to early spring before new growth appears, removing dead, damaged, or crossing stems. For the brightest yellow winter stems, coppice established plants hard every 1–3 years, cutting older stems close to ground level to encourage fresh, strongly coloured shoots.

Fertilising: Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser or apply a layer of compost around the base to support healthy new growth.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase, and provide deep watering during extended dry periods, especially in free-draining soils.

Pest control: Watch for aphids, scale, and caterpillars. Treat light infestations with a firm spray of water or insecticidal soap, and remove heavily affected growth if needed.

Disease management: Look out for leaf spot, powdery mildew, and canker. Signs include spotted or distorted leaves, white powdery growth, or sunken lesions on stems. Improve airflow by thinning crowded growth, remove affected material, and use an appropriate fungicide if disease persists.
