Camellia Yoi Machi is an evergreen shrub grown for its white flowers edged in pale pink. The blooms have a classic form and appear from late autumn through winter, bringing quiet colour to the garden during the cooler months. This camellia grows to around 1.5 to 2m high, with a dense, upright habit and glossy dark green foliage that looks tidy year-round.
This camellia suits a cottage garden, a formal border, or a Japanese-style planting. Use it as a specimen shrub or plant in a row for a structured hedge or screen. The white and pale pink tones pair well with other winter-flowering camellias in soft shades, or with dark-leafed shrubs that deepen the contrast.
Grow Camellia Yoi Machi in part shade or morning sun with afternoon shade. It prefers free-draining, acidic soil enriched with compost. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and protect the roots. Avoid heavy, wet ground and exposed positions with strong wind.
Trim lightly after flowering and feed each spring with a camellia and azalea fertiliser. Camellias are not known to be toxic to cats, dogs, or horses, making this a reasonable choice for pet-friendly gardens. Water regularly in the first summer to establish the plant.
Trimming: Trim lightly straight after flowering in late winter or early spring to shape the plant and keep it tidy. Camellias flower on old wood, so avoid cutting back hard. Remove any dead, weak, or crossing stems to maintain an open structure.
Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent flowers by hand to keep the plant looking tidy and to reduce the risk of petal blight, but leaving them does no harm to the plant.
Fertilising: Feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for camellias and azaleas. A light application after flowering encourages healthy new growth. Avoid high-phosphorus or general garden fertilisers, which can unbalance the soil for acid-loving plants.
Watering: Water regularly through the first summer while the plant establishes. After that, water deeply during dry spells. Mulch around the base to hold soil moisture and keep the roots cool through summer.
Pest Control: Watch for scale insects and aphids, which can appear on new growth. Check stems and leaf undersides regularly and treat early with horticultural oil or a suitable spray.
Disease Management: Camellia petal blight can cause flowers to brown and drop early. Remove affected blooms promptly and clear fallen petals from the ground to reduce spread. Avoid wet, heavy soil, which increases the risk of Phytophthora root rot. Good airflow and free-draining soil are the best long-term prevention.
