Camellia San Dimas

Camellia San Dimas is a distinguished evergreen shrub renowned for its reasonably large, semi double flowers that are rich vibrant red with yellow stamens. These flowers appear in late winter to early spring, providing a striking contrast to the plant’s glossy, dark green foliage. Camellia San Dimas is an excellent choice for adding bold colour and elegance to your garden during the cooler months.

Ideal for use as a focal point in garden beds, borders, or as a standalone specimen. It thrives in partially shaded areas, preferably with morning sun and afternoon shade, though it can also tolerate full shade. This plant prefers acidic, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells, to keep the soil consistently moist.

For optimal growth, plant 1.5-2m apart which will allow the shrub to develop fully and ensures good air circulation, which helps prevent disease. At maturity, Camellia San Dimas reaches a height of approximately 2.5m and a spread of about 2m, making it a substantial yet graceful addition to any garden.

Trimming: Prune Camellia San Dimas after flowering in late winter or early spring to maintain its shape and remove any dead or damaged branches.

Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flowers to encourage new growth and maintain a tidy appearance.

Fertilising: Feed with a balanced, acid-forming fertiliser in spring and midsummer. Avoid fertilising after late summer as it can encourage new growth susceptible to frost damage.

Watering: Ensure the soil remains moist but not waterlogged, particularly during the establishment phase and in dry periods. Mulch around the base to help retain moisture.

Pest Control: Watch for common pests such as aphids, scale insects, and spider mites. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil as needed.

Disease Management: Look out for signs of root rot, camellia petal blight, and sooty mould. Improve drainage to prevent root rot, remove affected flowers promptly to control petal blight, and treat sooty mould by managing the underlying pest issues.
