Calycanthus x raulstonii Hartlage Wine is a captivating deciduous shrub celebrated for its large, wine-red flowers with a subtle fragrance. The star-shaped flowers appear from late spring through summer, featuring a rich burgundy hue with a soft cream centre, offering long-lasting seasonal interest. Its broad, glossy green leaves provide a lush backdrop, turning golden-yellow in Autumn for added visual appeal. This hybrid combines the bold flowers of Calycanthus chinensis with the robust growth of Calycanthus floridus, resulting in a vigorous and showy garden specimen.

Thrives in full sun to partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil that retains moisture. Prefers a sheltered spot to protect its early flowers from strong winds. Allow 1.5 to 2 metres spacing for best display and air circulation.
Reaches approximately 2 to 2.5 metres tall and wide when mature, forming a rounded, multi-stemmed shrub with striking seasonal interest.
Trimming: Prune lightly after flowering to shape and control size. Remove any crossing or weak branches in winter while the plant is dormant, but avoid heavy pruning as this may reduce the following year’s flowering.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. An annual mulch with compost or well-rotted manure will also help maintain soil fertility and moisture.
Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from supplementary watering in extended dry spells.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Check occasionally for aphids or leaf beetles and treat with insecticidal soap if necessary.
Disease Management: Rarely troubled by disease. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to minimise the risk of fungal leaf spots. Remove and dispose of any affected leaves if symptoms appear.
