Calycanthus floridus

Calycanthus floridus, known as the Sweetshrub or Carolina Allspice, is a deciduous shrub native to the southeastern United States. This plant is renowned for its fragrant, wine-red to brown flowers that resemble small magnolias and bloom profusely in the late spring and early summer. The flowers emit a unique spicy fragrance, often compared to strawberries or red wine, which intensifies in the evening. The glossy, dark green leaves turn golden yellow in the fall, adding seasonal interest to the garden. Calycanthus floridus thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil. It is an excellent choice for naturalistic plantings, as a specimen in a mixed border, or planted near outdoor living areas where its scent can be enjoyed. Grows approx. 1.5m tall and 2m wide.
