Buxus harlandii
Buxus harlandii is a compact, slow-growing boxwood species known for its fine-textured, deep green foliage and naturally neat, rounded form. Its small, narrow leaves are more refined than those of common box cultivars, making it a standout choice for clipped shapes, topiary, or low hedging. With its tidy growth habit and resistance to common diseases, this species is especially valued for formal garden elements and container displays.
Ideal for use in Mediterranean, formal, or oriental-style gardens, Buxus harlandii lends itself well to structure and precision in design. It also performs beautifully in pots where its tidy shape can be closely managed.
Plant in a position with full sun to partial shade and provide well-drained soil that retains some moisture. This species is drought-tolerant once established and appreciates regular pruning to maintain shape. Space 30-50 cm apart for low hedges or closer for dense edging.
Typically grows to around 1 metre tall and wide, forming a compact, mounded shrub suitable for detailed garden work.
Trimming: Lightly trim in late spring to maintain shape and encourage dense growth. For hedging, clip up to three times annually during the growing season, avoiding harsh cuts into old wood.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Supplement with a liquid feed during active growth if foliage appears pale or growth is sluggish.
Watering: Water deeply during dry periods and especially while establishing. Ensure the soil stays evenly moist but not waterlogged, as boxwood dislikes extremes in soil moisture.
Pest Control: Monitor for boxwood leafminer and psyllids, particularly in warmer months. Use insecticidal soap or horticultural oil at the first sign of infestation.
Disease Management: Prone to box blight and root rot in poorly ventilated or damp conditions. Improve airflow by spacing plants well, avoid overhead watering, and remove affected foliage promptly. Use a fungicide if blight symptoms appear.
