Notify MeThe Buxus x Green Gem – Topiary Ball is a meticulously shaped evergreen with dense, glossy green foliage, perfect for adding structure and formality to garden spaces year-round. With its compact growth and natural symmetry, this topiary ball offers instant impact and requires minimal maintenance to retain its shape.
Ideal for framing entrances, lining pathways, or displaying in containers, it complements formal, contemporary, and Mediterranean gardens.
Position in full sun to part shade, in well-drained soil with moderate moisture. If planting multiple, allow at least 60 cm spacing to showcase each form distinctly.
Mature size: Maintains a dense, rounded shape approximately 60–80 cm in diameter with occasional light trimming.
Trimming: Trim lightly in late spring to refine shape, then again in late summer to maintain a crisp, rounded form. Use sharp shears for a clean finish, and avoid trimming in autumn to reduce frost damage to tender new growth.
Deadheading: Not applicable, as this topiary is maintained for its evergreen foliage.
Fertilising: Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy, dense growth. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers, which can cause soft, leggy growth that disrupts the ball shape.
Watering: Water consistently during the establishment phase and during hot or dry spells. Topiary balls in pots may require more frequent watering—ensure containers have excellent drainage to prevent root rot.
Pest Control: Inspect regularly for Buxus psyllid and leafminer—look for distorted, cupped, or mined leaves. Treat early with horticultural oil or a suitable systemic insecticide.
Disease Management: Watch for signs of Buxus blight (leaf drop, black spots, stem lesions) and root rot. Ensure good air circulation around the plant, avoid wetting foliage when watering, and remove any infected growth immediately. Apply a fungicide if symptoms appear.
