Notify MeBrunfelsia 'Scent-sational' is an evergreen shrub treasured for its richly fragrant, colour-changing flowers. Each bloom opens deep purple, fades to lavender, then turns white-creating a stunning tricolour display on a single plant. Flowering from mid-spring through summer, it also features lush, glossy green foliage, adding structure and year-round interest. Growing to around 1-1.5 metres high and wide, it’s ideal for subtropical, cottage, and scented garden styles, as well as containers and sheltered courtyards.
Plant in full sun to partial shade with free-draining, humus-rich soil. Protect from frost and cold winds. Space plants 1-1.2 metres apart for mass planting or hedging. Water regularly during dry periods and feed with a balanced fertiliser during the growing season. Mulch annually to retain moisture and improve soil health. Light pruning after flowering helps maintain a compact, bushy shape.
Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a compact shape and encourage bushy growth. Remove any dead, damaged, or leggy stems throughout the year. Avoid heavy pruning, as it may reduce next season’s flowering.
Deadheading: Regularly remove spent blooms to encourage continued flowering and keep the plant looking neat.
Fertilising: Feed every 4-6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced fertiliser. A high-potassium formula (e.g. tomato fertiliser) will help boost flower production.
Watering: Water regularly during dry periods and establishment. Brunfelsia prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil-avoid letting it dry out completely or become waterlogged. Mulch can help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
Pest Control: Monitor for common pests such as aphids, whiteflies, and mealybugs, especially on new growth. Treat infestations early with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Disease Management: Ensure good airflow and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal issues like leaf spot or root rot. Remove and dispose of any diseased or yellowing foliage promptly. Use slightly acidic, free-draining soil for best results.
