Boronia Lipstick

Boronia heterophylla Lipstick is a vibrant cultivar prized for its vivid deep pink, bell-shaped flowers that cover the shrub from mid to late Spring. The aromatic, finely textured green foliage adds year-round appeal and releases a citrus-like scent when handled. Its bold floral display and fragrance make it a standout in the garden.

Perfect for sensory planting, mixed borders, or near patios and pathways, it suits cottage, native, and informal garden styles.

Plant in partial shade in moist, free-draining, acidic to neutral soil. Provide protection from strong wind and avoid waterlogged conditions. Space plants 1–1.2m apart to encourage airflow and natural shape.

Mature size: Upright and softly bushy, growing to approximately 1.5–2m tall and 1–1.2m wide.

Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a compact, bushy shape and promote healthy new growth. Avoid cutting into old wood, as Boronia can be slow or unwilling to reshoot from hard cuts.

Deadheading: Not strictly necessary, but removing spent flowers can enhance appearance and may encourage additional flowering in favourable conditions.

Fertilising: Use a low-phosphorus, slow-release fertiliser designed for Australian natives in early spring. A light top-up in late summer can support ongoing vigour. Avoid fertilisers high in phosphorus, which can damage the roots.

Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, particularly during the establishment phase and dry weather. Boronia ‘Lipstick’ prefers well-drained soil that doesn’t dry out completely. Mulch lightly with organic material like pine bark, keeping it clear of the plant's base.

Pest Control: Usually low-maintenance, but monitor for aphids or caterpillars around new growth. Treat infestations early with a gentle insecticidal soap or a product safe for native plants.

Disease Management: Prone to root rot in poorly drained or waterlogged soils. Ensure excellent drainage and avoid disturbing the root zone. To prevent fungal issues, maintain good air circulation through light pruning and appropriate spacing. Sudden dieback can occur—minimise stress and maintain consistent care.
