Boronia Ice Charlotte
Boronia heterophylla Ice Charlotte is a refined cultivar of the Western Australian species, offering masses of pale blush-pink, bell-shaped flowers from mid to late Spring. The soft-toned flowers contrast elegantly with the fine, glossy green foliage, while the entire plant releases a fresh, citrus-like fragrance when touched.
Ideal for sensory gardens, mixed borders, or planting near entrances and walkways, it complements cottage, native, and informal garden styles.
Plant in partial shade with moist, free-draining, acidic to neutral soil. Shelter from harsh wind and avoid overly dry or soggy positions. Space plants around 1–1.2m apart for natural growth and ventilation.
Mature size: Upright and graceful, reaching approximately 1.5–2m tall and 1–1.2m wide.
Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a neat, compact form and encourage bushier growth. Avoid cutting into old wood, as boronias do not regenerate well from hard pruning.
Deadheading: Not essential, but removing spent flowers can help keep the plant tidy and may promote further flowering in ideal conditions.
Fertilising: Apply a low-phosphorus, slow-release fertiliser in early spring, formulated for native plants. A second light feed in late summer may support ongoing health and flowering. Avoid high-phosphorus products to protect the sensitive root system.
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, particularly during dry periods and while establishing. ‘Ice Charlotte’ requires excellent drainage but does not tolerate drying out—mulch with fine pine bark or leaf litter to conserve moisture, keeping mulch clear of the base.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free, but monitor for aphids or leaf-eating insects, especially around new growth. If needed, use a gentle insecticidal soap safe for natives.
Disease Management: Susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils. Ensure free-draining conditions and avoid overwatering. Good airflow helps prevent fungal issues, so space plants well and prune lightly to maintain ventilation. Sudden dieback can occur—minimise root disturbance and stress.
