Berberis thunbergii Atrosuperba

Small yellow flowers appear in spring, followed by red berries in autumn that provide seasonal interest and attract birds. With a dense, rounded habit reaching 1.5 to 2 metres high and wide, it’s ideal for hedging, borders, and low-maintenance or wildlife-friendly garden styles.
Plant in full sun to partial shade with free-draining soil. Full sun enhances foliage colour. Tolerates drought, wind, and urban conditions once established. Space plants 1 to 1.5 metres apart for hedging or grouped planting. Prune in winter or early spring to maintain shape. A tough, colourful shrub that provides year-round interest, structure, and habitat value.
Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to shape and remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. If used as a hedge or formal specimen, light summer trimming can maintain a tidy form. Avoid heavy pruning into old wood, as regrowth may be slow.
Deadheading: Not necessary. The small flowers are followed by ornamental red berries, which are beneficial for wildlife and add seasonal interest.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy foliage and flowering. In poor soils, a compost mulch in autumn can improve soil condition.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Berberis thunbergii ‘Atrosuperba’ is drought-tolerant and prefers well-drained soil. Water deeply during extended dry periods.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Occasionally, aphids may appear-treat early with insecticidal soap or neem oil if required.
Disease Management: Ensure good airflow to reduce the risk of powdery mildew or fungal leaf spot. Remove any affected leaves and avoid overhead watering. Maintain plant health with proper spacing and pruning.
