Berberis Little Favourite

Berberis thunbergii Little Favourite is a compact, deciduous shrub valued for its tight, rounded habit and vibrant foliage that shifts from bright red in spring to deeper burgundy tones through summer, finishing with fiery autumn colour. Small yellow flowers appear in spring, followed by red berries that provide seasonal interest and attract birds.

Perfect for formal, cottage, and low-maintenance gardens, it’s ideal for borders, edging, or small-scale hedging where space is limited but colour and structure are desired.

Performs best in full sun to part shade and thrives in well-drained soil with moderate moisture. Drought tolerant once established and very low maintenance. Space plants 40–50 cm apart for compact hedging or grouped planting.

Mature size: Reaches approximately 40–50 cm high and wide, forming a tidy, rounded shape.

Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Lightly trim to shape, remove dead or damaged wood, and thin out congested growth. For hedging, a light summer trim will help maintain density and form.

Deadheading: Not required, as Berberis is grown for its foliage, form, and berries rather than prolonged flowering. Spent flowers will naturally give way to ornamental berries.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. In poor soils, an additional mid-summer feed may benefit younger plants or hedges.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, Berberis is drought-tolerant but will benefit from occasional deep watering during extended dry spells.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, though aphids and scale insects can occasionally appear. Treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if needed.

Disease Management: Susceptible to powdery mildew, rust, and leaf spot in humid or poorly ventilated conditions. Ensure good air circulation, avoid overhead watering, and remove affected foliage. Apply a fungicide if symptoms persist.
