Banksia serrata
Banksia serrata, commonly known as old man banksia, is a robust, evergreen shrub or small tree native to Australia, valued for its bold, serrated grey-green leaves and large, cylindrical flower spikes. The pale yellow to creamy flowers appear from late autumn through winter, providing an important nectar source for birds and pollinators. Mature seed cones add year-round structural interest. Typically grows 2-5 metres high and 2-4 metres wide, making it ideal for coastal, native, and low-maintenance garden styles.
Plant in full sun with sandy, free-draining soil. Exceptionally tolerant of wind, coastal exposure, and dry conditions once established. Space plants 2-3 metres apart if planting in groups. Requires little maintenance-avoid phosphorus-rich fertilisers and prune lightly after flowering to shape or control size. Excellent for attracting native wildlife and creating a hardy, sculptural presence in the garden.
Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a compact shape and remove any dead or straggly growth. Avoid heavy pruning into old wood, as regrowth can be slow or absent from older stems.
Deadheading: Not necessary, but removing spent flower spikes can improve appearance and reduce unwanted seed drop. Some gardeners leave them on for their architectural interest.
Fertilising: Use a low-phosphorus fertiliser in early spring, specifically formulated for native plants. Over-fertilising, especially with phosphorus-rich products, can damage roots and reduce vigour.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Banksia serrata is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Requires sandy, well-drained soil-avoid clay and waterlogged conditions.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Occasionally, borers or scale insects may appear. Prune out affected wood and treat with neem oil or horticultural oil if necessary.
Disease Management: Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot (particularly Phytophthora). Avoid disturbing the root zone and ensure airflow around the plant. Remove any diseased or dead foliage promptly. Mulch lightly, keeping it clear of the trunk.
