Azalea Waeles Beauty is a compact evergreen azalea grown for its rich cherry red double flowers. The blooms open in spring and create a dense, layered display across the plant. The double form adds depth to each flower, giving the plant a full, rounded look. Mature size is typically 1 to 1.2m high and wide, making it well suited to smaller gardens and containers.
This azalea fits naturally into a cottage garden or a Japanese-style planting. It works well massed in groups for a bold block of colour, or planted as a single specimen to anchor a shaded border. The cherry red tone pairs well with white or pale pink azaleas for contrast, or with deep purple varieties for a richer effect.
Grow Waeles Beauty in part shade or morning sun with afternoon shade. It prefers free-draining, acidic soil enriched with compost. Mulch around the base to keep the shallow roots cool and moist. Avoid exposed, hot, or dry positions.
Water regularly through the first summer and during dry spells thereafter. Trim lightly after flowering to maintain a tidy shape. Like all azaleas and rhododendrons, this plant is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten, so take care in pet households.
Trimming: Trim lightly immediately after flowering in late spring to keep the plant compact and well shaped. Azaleas flower on old wood, so avoid cutting back hard. Remove any dead, weak, or crossing stems as you go.
Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent blooms by hand to tidy the plant after flowering, but leaving them does no harm to the plant's health or next season's display.
Fertilising: Feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. A second light feed after flowering helps support new growth. Avoid over-feeding, as the shallow roots are sensitive to excess nutrients.
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist through the growing season, but never waterlogged. Water deeply during summer and in any dry spell. A layer of mulch helps retain moisture and protects the shallow root system.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale insects. Check leaf undersides regularly and treat early with a suitable spray or horticultural oil to prevent populations from building up.
Disease Management: Good drainage and airflow prevent most problems. Wet or heavy soil encourages Phytophthora root rot, so ensure the bed is free-draining. In humid conditions, watch for powdery mildew and improve air circulation. Clear fallen leaves and spent flowers to reduce fungal risk. Check for leaf gall, which appears as pale, swollen growths; pick off affected leaves and bin them.
