Azalea Sunburst is an evergreen azalea that produces salmon to coral-pink blooms with distinctive white-edged petals. The flowers open in spring, covering the plant in a soft, layered display that draws the eye without being loud. It grows to around 1 to 1.5m high and wide, making it a practical choice for gardens of most sizes.
This azalea suits a cottage garden, a Japanese-style planting, or a mixed shrub border. Plant several together for a cohesive sweep of colour, or use a single specimen to brighten a shaded corner. The salmon and coral tones pair well with white-flowered shrubs or soft purple companions nearby.
Grow Azalea Sunburst in part shade or morning sun with afternoon shade. It needs free-draining, acidic soil enriched with compost at planting. Mulch the root zone to keep moisture in and soil temperature stable. Avoid exposed, dry positions, which place unnecessary stress on the plant.
Water regularly through the first summer and during any dry spell thereafter. Trim lightly after flowering to maintain a tidy shape. Like all azaleas and rhododendrons, this azalea is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten, so take care in households with pets.
Trimming: Trim lightly straight after flowering in late spring to keep the plant compact and well shaped. Azaleas flower on old wood, so avoid hard pruning. Remove any dead or crossing stems at the same time.
Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent blooms by hand to tidy the plant, but leaving them does no harm and the plant will perform well either way.
Fertilising: Feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. A light second application after flowering supports healthy new growth. Avoid over-feeding, as the shallow roots are sensitive to excess nutrients.
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Water deeply through summer and during any dry spell. A layer of mulch helps retain moisture and keeps the shallow roots cool.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale insects. Check the undersides of leaves regularly and treat early with a suitable spray or horticultural oil if numbers build.
Disease Management: Free-draining soil, good airflow, and clearing fallen leaves and spent flowers prevent most problems. Avoid wet or heavy soil, which encourages Phytophthora root rot. In still, humid conditions, watch for powdery mildew and improve air circulation where possible.
