Azalea Starburst

Azalea Starburst is a compact evergreen azalea grown for its distinctive flower form. The blooms have a starry, multi-petalled shape that gives the plant its name, and they appear in generous numbers across the plant each spring. This azalea has a neat, rounded habit and reaches around 0.8 to 1.2m high and wide at maturity, making it a practical choice for smaller spaces.

Azalea Starburst suits a cottage garden, a Japanese-style planting, or a shaded mixed border. Plant several together for a massed spring display, or use a single specimen to add interest to a sheltered corner. It also grows well in containers on a deck or patio, where the detailed flower form can be appreciated up close.

Grow this azalea in part shade or morning sun with afternoon shade. It needs free-draining, acidic soil enriched with compost or leaf mould. Mulch around the base to keep the shallow roots cool and moist. Avoid heavy clay or exposed, dry positions.

Water regularly through the first summer and during dry spells thereafter. Trim lightly after flowering to maintain shape. Like all azaleas, Azalea Starburst is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten, so take care in households with pets.

Trimming: Trim lightly immediately after flowering in late spring to keep the plant tidy and compact. Azaleas flower on old wood, so avoid cutting back hard. Remove any dead, weak, or crossing stems as you go.

Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent blooms by hand to neaten the plant, but leaving them in place does no harm.

Fertilising: Feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. A light second application after flowering supports healthy new growth. Avoid heavy feeding, as the shallow roots are sensitive to excess nutrients.

Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, particularly through summer and dry spells. Water deeply rather than lightly and often. Mulching the root zone helps retain moisture and keeps the soil temperature stable.

Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale insects. Check the undersides of leaves regularly and treat early with a suitable spray or horticultural oil if numbers build.

Disease Management: Free-draining soil and good airflow around the plant prevent most problems. Avoid waterlogged conditions, which invite Phytophthora root rot. Clear fallen leaves and spent flowers to reduce the risk of petal blight and other fungal issues.
