Azalea Shirazz
Notify MeAzalea Shirazz is a striking evergreen shrub featuring warm burgundy-maroon foliage that holds its colour year-round, providing dramatic contrast in the garden. In mid to late spring, vivid red flowers appear as a seasonal bonus, enhancing its bold presence. The rich, wine-coloured foliage makes it ideal for accent planting, whether clipped into a neat shape or left to grow naturally.
Thrives in a sunny to partly-shaded position with well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Best in cooler spots with dappled light. Perfect for mass planting, low hedging or as a standout feature in containers or small gardens. It can also be trained as a standard for added structure. Light pruning after flowering will help maintain shape and density.
Grows to approximately 100cm high and wide, forming a dense, compact shrub.
Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain its compact, rounded form and encourage dense foliage. Can be clipped more formally for hedging or shaped if trained as a standard.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers by hand to enhance appearance and support the development of next season’s buds, taking care not to damage new growth.
Fertilising: Apply a slow-release, acid-loving fertiliser in early spring and again after flowering. This supports both vibrant foliage colour and strong flowering.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment period and in dry conditions. While drought-tolerant once established, consistent moisture improves flowering and keeps foliage vibrant.
Pest Control: Monitor for azalea lace bug, especially in warmer weather, which can cause pale spotting on leaves. Treat early with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
Disease Management: Ensure soil is free-draining to prevent root rot. Apply a mulch of pine bark or compost annually, keeping it clear of the stem base to minimise fungal issues and retain moisture. Remove any discoloured or damaged foliage as needed.
