Azalea Shiko

Azalea Shiko is a large-flowered evergreen azalea grown for its lavender mauve single blooms. The flowers are notably large and open reliably in spring, creating a soft, cool-toned display across the plant. It forms a rounded shrub growing to around 1 to 1.5m high and wide, with a tidy, manageable habit suited to a range of garden sizes.

This azalea works well in a cottage garden, a Japanese-style planting, or a shaded woodland border. The lavender mauve tone sits well alongside white, pale pink, or deep purple azaleas for a layered, harmonious look. Plant in groups for a massed effect, or use as a single specimen to anchor a shaded corner.

Grow Azalea Shiko in part shade or morning sun with afternoon shade. It needs free-draining, acidic soil enriched with organic matter. Work compost through the bed before planting and apply a layer of mulch to keep the shallow roots cool and moist. Avoid hot, exposed positions and heavy, poorly drained soils.

Water regularly through the first summer and during dry spells thereafter. Trim lightly after flowering to maintain shape. Like all azaleas, this plant is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten, so take care in pet households.

Trimming: Trim lightly immediately after flowering in late spring to keep the plant compact and well shaped. Azaleas flower on old wood, so avoid cutting back hard. Remove any dead, weak, or crossing stems at the same time.

Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent blooms by hand to tidy the plant after flowering, but leaving them on does no harm to the shrub.

Fertilising: Feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. A light second application after flowering helps support new growth. Avoid heavy feeding, as the shallow roots are sensitive to excess nutrients.

Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist through the growing season, particularly over the first summer. Water deeply during dry spells. Mulching around the base retains moisture and protects the shallow root system.

Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale insects. Check leaf undersides regularly and treat early with a suitable horticultural oil or insecticide spray.

Disease Management: Free-draining soil and good airflow prevent most problems. Wet or compacted soil increases the risk of Phytophthora root rot. In humid, still conditions watch for powdery mildew, and check for pale swollen leaf galls caused by Exobasidium. Pick off any galls and bin them. Clear fallen leaves and spent flowers to reduce fungal pressure.
