Azalea Sherwood Red is a compact evergreen azalea with single bright orange-red flowers. The blooms open in spring and cover the plant in a clean, even display. This is a reliable Kurume-type azalea, valued for its tidy, rounded habit and consistent colour from year to year. Mature size reaches around 1 to 1.2m high and wide, making it well suited to smaller gardens and containers.
This azalea fits naturally into a cottage garden, a Japanese-style planting, or a mixed shrub border. Plant it in groups to create a bold block of colour, or use single specimens to brighten a shaded corner. The vivid orange-red tone pairs well with white or soft pink azaleas nearby.
Grow Sherwood Red in part shade or morning sun with afternoon shade. It prefers free-draining, acidic soil enriched with organic matter. Work compost through the bed at planting and apply a layer of mulch to keep the shallow roots cool and moist. Avoid hot, exposed positions.
Water regularly through the first summer and during dry spells after that. Feed each spring with an azalea-specific fertiliser. Like all azaleas and rhododendrons, this plant is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten.
Trimming: Trim lightly straight after flowering in late spring to maintain a tidy, compact shape. Azaleas flower on old wood, so avoid cutting back hard. Remove any dead or crossing stems at the same time.
Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent blooms by hand to tidy the plant, but leaving them in place does no harm.
Fertilising: Feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. A light second application after flowering supports strong new growth. Avoid over-feeding, as the roots are shallow and sensitive.
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Water deeply through summer and during any dry spell. A mulch layer helps retain moisture and protects the shallow root system.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale insects. Check the undersides of leaves regularly and treat early with a suitable spray or horticultural oil if numbers build.
Disease Management: Free-draining soil and good airflow prevent most problems. Wet or heavy soil increases the risk of Phytophthora root rot. Clear fallen leaves regularly to reduce the chance of petal blight and fungal build-up. Pale, swollen leaf galls should be picked off and binned promptly.
