Azalea Road Runner is a compact evergreen azalea grown for its tidy, low-spreading habit and reliable spring flowering. The blooms appear in abundance across the plant, creating a dense, even display season after season. This is a useful azalea for gardeners who want strong seasonal colour without a large footprint. Mature size is typically around 0.6 to 0.9m high and wider than it is tall.
Road Runner suits a cottage garden, a Japanese-style planting, or a mixed shrub border. Its low, spreading form makes it a natural choice for edging paths, fronting taller shrubs, or mass planting across a bank. It works well in containers on a deck or courtyard where its spring display can be appreciated up close.
Grow this azalea in part shade or morning sun with afternoon shade. It needs free-draining, acidic soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Mulch well to keep the shallow roots cool and retain moisture. Avoid exposed, dry positions or heavy soils that hold water.
Water regularly through the first summer and during dry spells thereafter. Like all azaleas and rhododendrons, Azalea Road Runner is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten, so take care in pet households.
Trimming: Trim lightly immediately after flowering in late spring to maintain the low, spreading shape and encourage bushy growth. Azaleas flower on old wood, so avoid cutting back hard. Remove any dead or crossing stems at the same time.
Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent blooms by hand to tidy the plant after flowering, but leaving them does no harm to the plant.
Fertilising: Feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. A light second application after flowering supports new season growth. Avoid over-feeding, as the shallow roots are sensitive to high nutrient levels.
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist through the growing season, particularly over summer. Water deeply during dry spells and mulch well to retain moisture and protect the shallow root system. Do not allow the plant to sit in waterlogged soil.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale insects. Check the undersides of leaves regularly and treat early with a suitable spray or horticultural oil to prevent populations building up.
Disease Management: Ensure free-draining soil and good airflow around the plant to reduce the risk of Phytophthora root rot and powdery mildew. In humid conditions, watch for petal blight on spent flowers. Clear fallen leaves and old flower debris from around the base regularly.
