Azalea Red Ruffles is an evergreen azalea grown for its deep salmon rose flowers. The blooms are double and heavily ruffled, giving each flower a full, layered look that stands out against the dense, dark foliage. It flowers in spring and puts on a reliable display year after year. Mature plants reach around 1 to 1.5m high and wide, making this azalea a practical choice for small to mid-sized gardens.
This azalea suits a cottage garden, a Japanese-style planting, or a mixed shrub border. Use it in groups to create a bold block of colour, or position a single plant to anchor a shaded bed. The deep salmon rose tone pairs well with white or soft cream flowering shrubs nearby.
Grow Red Ruffles in part shade, or morning sun with afternoon shade. It needs free-draining, acidic soil enriched with compost. Mulch the root zone to retain moisture and keep shallow roots cool. Avoid exposed, hot, or dry positions, which put the plant under stress.
Water regularly through the first summer and during dry spells. Trim lightly after flowering to maintain shape. Like all azaleas and rhododendrons, this plant is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten, so take care in households with pets.
Trimming: Trim lightly straight after flowering in late spring to keep the plant compact and tidy. Azaleas flower on old wood, so avoid pruning hard into older stems. Remove any dead or crossing branches at this time.
Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent blooms by hand to tidy the plant after flowering, but leaving them does no harm to the plant.
Fertilising: Feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. A light second feed after flowering supports strong new growth. Avoid over-feeding, as the roots are shallow and sensitive.
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Water deeply through summer and during any dry spells. A layer of mulch helps retain moisture and protects the shallow root system.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale insects. Check the undersides of leaves regularly and treat early with a suitable insecticide or horticultural oil.
Disease Management: Good drainage and airflow prevent most problems. Wet or heavy soil invites Phytophthora root rot, which is the main risk for azaleas. Petal blight can affect flowers in warm, humid conditions. Clear fallen leaves and spent flowers regularly to reduce fungal risk.
