Azalea Red Light is an evergreen azalea grown for its deep red double flowers with dark markings. The blooms are full and layered, opening in spring and covering the plant in a rich, saturated display. This is a reliable azalea with a tidy, rounded habit, growing to around 1 to 1.5m high and wide. It holds its form well without heavy pruning.
Red Light suits a cottage garden, a Japanese-style planting, or a mixed shrub border. Use it as a feature plant in a shaded corner, or mass several together for a dense block of colour. It pairs well with white or soft pink azaleas, which let the deep red tones stand out clearly.
Grow this azalea in part shade or morning sun with afternoon shade. It needs free-draining, acidic soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Mulch around the base to keep the shallow roots cool and retain moisture. Avoid exposed, hot positions, which dry the roots and stress the plant.
Trim lightly after flowering and feed in spring with an azalea and camellia fertiliser. Water regularly through the first summer and during dry spells. Like all azaleas, Red Light is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten.
Trimming: Trim lightly straight after flowering in late spring to maintain shape and encourage a compact habit. Azaleas flower on old wood, so avoid cutting back hard. Remove any dead, weak, or crossing stems at the same time.
Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent blooms by hand to tidy the plant, but leaving them does no harm to growth or the following season's flowering.
Fertilising: Feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. A light second application after flowering supports strong new growth. Keep rates moderate, as the shallow roots are sensitive to overfeeding.
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Water deeply through the first summer and during any dry spell. A layer of mulch over the root zone helps retain moisture and keeps roots cool.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale insects. Check the undersides of leaves regularly and treat early with a suitable spray or horticultural oil to prevent populations building up.
Disease Management: Good drainage and airflow prevent most problems. Avoid heavy or poorly drained soil, which encourages root rot. Clear fallen leaves and spent flowers from around the base to reduce the risk of petal blight and fungal issues.
