Azalea Pyrored

Azalea Pyrored is a compact evergreen azalea grown for its pure red hose-in-hose flowers. The double-layered blooms open in spring and cover the plant in a dense, even display. This azalea holds a tidy, rounded habit and matures to around 0.6 to 1m high and wide, making it a practical choice for smaller spaces and containers.

This azalea suits a cottage garden, a Japanese-style planting, or a mixed shrub border. Plant several together to create a solid block of colour, or use a single plant to lift a shaded corner. The vivid red tone pairs well with white or soft pink azaleas nearby, and the plant also works well in pots on a deck or patio.

Grow Pyrored in part shade, or morning sun with afternoon shade. It needs free-draining, acidic soil enriched with organic matter. Work compost through the bed at planting and apply a generous mulch to keep the shallow roots cool and moist. Avoid hot, dry, exposed positions.

Water regularly through the first summer and during any dry spells after that. Trim lightly after flowering to keep the shape tidy. Like all azaleas, this plant is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten, so take care in pet households.

Trimming: Trim lightly straight after flowering in late spring to shape the plant and keep it compact. Azaleas flower on old wood, so avoid hard pruning. Remove any dead or crossing stems at the same time.

Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent blooms by hand to tidy the plant, but leaving them does no harm.

Fertilising: Feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. A light second feed after flowering supports the new season's growth. Do not over-feed, as the roots are shallow and sensitive.

Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Water deeply through summer and during dry spells. A layer of mulch helps retain moisture and protects the shallow root system.

Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale insects. Check leaf undersides regularly and treat early with a suitable spray or horticultural oil.

Disease Management: Good drainage and airflow prevent most problems. Wet or heavy soil increases the risk of Phytophthora root rot. Powdery mildew can appear in still, humid conditions. Clear fallen leaves and spent flowers to reduce fungal risk. Pale swollen leaf galls indicate Exobasidium; pick them off and bin them.
