Azalea Pink Dream is a compact evergreen azalea with soft pink flowers that carry a magenta-speckled throat. The two-tone colouring gives each bloom a depth that holds interest up close. It flowers reliably in spring, producing a generous flush that covers the plant. Mature size is typically around 0.8 to 1m high and wide, making it a good fit for smaller spaces and containers.
This azalea suits a cottage garden, a Japanese-style planting, or a shaded mixed border. Use several plants together to build a soft massed display, or place a single plant where the flower detail can be appreciated. The pale pink tones pair well with white or deep burgundy azaleas nearby.
Grow Pink Dream in part shade or morning sun with afternoon shade. It needs free-draining, acidic soil enriched with compost. Mulch the root zone to keep moisture in and soil temperature steady. Avoid exposed, dry, or waterlogged positions.
Water regularly through the first summer and in dry spells thereafter. Trim lightly after flowering to maintain shape. Like all azaleas, this plant is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten, so take care in pet households.
Trimming: Trim lightly straight after flowering in late spring to keep the plant compact and tidy. Azaleas flower on old wood, so avoid cutting back hard. Remove any dead, weak, or crossing stems at the same time.
Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent blooms by hand to tidy the plant after flowering, but leaving them does no harm to the azalea.
Fertilising: Feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. A light second feed after flowering supports healthy new growth. Avoid general-purpose fertilisers high in nitrogen, and do not over-feed.
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist through the growing season, especially in summer. Water deeply during dry spells rather than little and often. A layer of mulch helps retain moisture and protects the shallow root system.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale insects, particularly on new growth and leaf undersides. Treat early with a suitable horticultural oil or insecticidal spray before populations build.
Disease Management: Free-draining soil and good airflow prevent most problems. Wet or heavy soil invites Phytophthora root rot, which is the main risk for azaleas in poorly drained sites. Watch for petal blight in warm, humid springs and remove affected flowers promptly. Clear fallen leaves and spent flowers to reduce fungal pressure.
