Azalea Paradise Pixie

Azalea Paradise Pixie is a compact evergreen azalea bearing soft magenta hose-in-hose flowers in spring. The double-layered blooms sit neatly along each stem, giving the plant a full, layered look from September through to November. It grows to around 0.6 to 0.8m high and wide, making it one of the smaller azaleas available.

This azalea suits a cottage garden, a Japanese-style planting, or a shaded mixed border. Its small size makes it a natural choice for container growing on a deck or courtyard. Plant several together for a massed display, or use a single plant as a low accent among ferns and groundcovers. The soft magenta tone pairs well with white or pale pink flowering companions.

Grow Paradise Pixie in part shade or morning sun with afternoon shade. It needs free-draining, acidic soil enriched with compost. Mulch around the base to keep roots cool and retain moisture. Avoid exposed, dry positions, which stress the shallow root system.

Trim lightly after flowering and feed once in spring with an azalea and camellia fertiliser. Water regularly through the first summer and during dry spells. Like all azaleas and rhododendrons, this plant is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten.

Trimming: Trim lightly straight after flowering in late spring, once the blooms have finished. Azaleas flower on old wood, so keep pruning light and avoid cutting back hard. Remove any dead or crossing stems to maintain a tidy shape.

Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent blooms by hand to neaten the plant, but leaving them does no harm and saves time.

Fertilising: Feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. One application at the start of the growing season is usually enough. Avoid over-feeding, as the shallow roots are sensitive to excess nutrients.

Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist through the growing season, especially during the first summer after planting. Water deeply during dry spells. A layer of mulch helps retain moisture and protects the shallow root zone.

Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale insects. Check the undersides of leaves regularly and treat early with a suitable insecticide or horticultural oil if numbers build.

Disease Management: Good drainage and air movement around the plant prevent most problems. Wet or poorly drained soil increases the risk of Phytophthora root rot. In humid conditions, watch for petal blight on the flowers and clear fallen leaves and spent blooms from around the base.
