Azalea Paradise Christine is an evergreen azalea grown for its double cerise pink flowers. The blooms are full and layered, opening in spring and covering the plant in a dense flush of warm colour. This is a reliable garden azalea with a tidy, mounding habit. Mature plants reach around 1 to 1.5m high and wide, making them a useful mid-border size.
This azalea suits a cottage garden, a Japanese-style planting, or a mixed shrub border. Plant it in groups for a massed display, or use it as a single specimen to anchor a shaded bed. The cerise pink tone pairs well with white or soft mauve azaleas for a layered spring display.
Grow Paradise Christine in part shade or morning sun with afternoon shade. It prefers free-draining, acidic soil enriched with compost. Mulch around the base to keep the shallow roots cool and retain moisture. Avoid exposed, dry positions, which can stress the plant and reduce flowering.
Trim lightly after flowering and feed in spring with an azalea and camellia fertiliser. Water well through the first summer and during dry spells. Like all azaleas, this plant is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten, so take care in pet households.
Trimming: Trim lightly straight after flowering in late spring to maintain a compact, even shape. Azaleas flower on old wood, so avoid cutting back hard. Remove any dead, weak, or crossing stems at the same time.
Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent blooms by hand to tidy the plant after flowering, but leaving them does no harm to the plant's health or next season's display.
Fertilising: Feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. A light second application after flowering supports strong new growth. Avoid heavy feeding, as the shallow roots are sensitive to excess nutrients.
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Water deeply through the first summer and during any dry spell. A layer of mulch helps retain moisture and protects the shallow root system.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale insects, particularly on new growth and the undersides of leaves. Treat early with a suitable spray or horticultural oil to prevent populations from building up.
Disease Management: Free-draining soil and good airflow prevent most problems. Wet or heavy soil increases the risk of Phytophthora root rot, so avoid poorly drained positions. In humid conditions, watch for powdery mildew and petal blight. Clear fallen leaves and spent flowers to reduce fungal risk.
