Azalea Pacific Twilight

Azalea Pacific Twilight is a compact evergreen azalea with clear mauve-pink flowers. The blooms appear in spring, covering the plant in a reliable, even display of colour. This azalea has a tidy, rounded habit that makes it easy to place in smaller gardens and containers. Mature plants reach around 1 to 1.2m high and wide.

Pacific Twilight suits a cottage garden, a Japanese-style planting, or a mixed shrub border. Use it in groups for a massed effect, or plant single specimens to brighten a shaded corner. The soft mauve-pink tone pairs well with white or deep purple azaleas, and it holds its own alongside other spring-flowering shrubs.

Grow this azalea in part shade, or in a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade. It thrives in free-draining, acidic soil enriched with compost. Mulch the root zone well to keep moisture in and roots cool. Avoid exposed, hot positions that dry out quickly.

Water regularly through the first summer and during dry spells thereafter. Feed once in spring with an azalea and camellia fertiliser. Like all azaleas and rhododendrons, Pacific Twilight is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten, so take care in pet households.

Trimming: Trim lightly straight after flowering in late spring to maintain a compact, rounded shape. Azaleas flower on old wood, so avoid cutting back hard. Remove any dead, weak, or crossing stems at this time.

Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent blooms by hand to tidy the plant, but leaving them in place does no harm.

Fertilising: Feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. A light second application after flowering supports healthy new growth. Avoid over-feeding, as the shallow roots are sensitive.

Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist through the growing season, particularly over summer. Water deeply during dry spells and mulch well to retain moisture around the shallow root zone. Avoid waterlogging.

Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale insects. Check leaf undersides regularly and treat early with a suitable insecticide or horticultural oil.

Disease Management: Free-draining soil and good airflow prevent most problems. Wet or poorly drained conditions invite Phytophthora root rot. Petal blight can affect flowers in wet springs. Clear fallen leaves and spent flowers to reduce fungal risk.
