Azalea mollis Klondyke is a deciduous azalea grown for its rich golden yellow flowers. The blooms appear in spring, before the new leaves emerge, giving the plant a bright, uncluttered display. It grows to around 1.5 to 2m high and wide, forming an open, upright shrub that becomes more settled and floriferous with each passing year.
This azalea suits a cottage garden, a woodland-style planting, or a mixed shrub border with dappled light. Plant several together for a massed effect in spring, or use a single specimen to anchor a shaded corner. The golden yellow tones pair well with white or soft apricot azaleas, and with the fresh green of emerging perennial foliage nearby.
Grow Klondyke in a sheltered position with morning sun and afternoon shade, or in dappled light under open canopy. It needs free-draining, acidic soil enriched with compost or leaf mould. Mulch the root zone well to keep moisture in and soil temperature stable. Avoid exposed, dry, or waterlogged positions.
Trim lightly after flowering and feed with an azalea-formulated fertiliser in spring. Water regularly through the first summer and during dry spells. Like all azaleas and rhododendrons, this plant is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten.
Trimming: Trim lightly straight after flowering in late spring to keep the plant tidy and well shaped. Azaleas flower on old wood, so avoid cutting back hard. Remove any dead, weak, or crossing stems at the base.
Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent blooms by hand if you prefer a tidier look, but leaving them does no harm to the plant.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. A light second feed after flowering helps support the season's new growth. Avoid over-feeding, as the shallow roots are easily stressed.
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist through the first growing season and in any dry periods after that. Water deeply rather than frequently. A layer of mulch over the root zone helps retain moisture and moderate soil temperature.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale insects. Check leaf undersides regularly and treat early with horticultural oil or a suitable spray if numbers build.
Disease Management: Free-draining soil, good airflow, and clearing fallen leaves reduce most disease risks. Wet or heavy soil can lead to Phytophthora root rot, which is the most serious risk for azaleas. In humid, still conditions, watch for powdery mildew on the foliage and improve air circulation where possible. Pale, swollen leaf galls indicate Exobasidium leaf gall; pick these off and bin them.
