Azalea mollis Ilam Apricot Beauty is a deciduous azalea bred for its large, open-faced blooms and reliable spring display. It flowers before the new leaves emerge, so each bloom is shown clearly against bare stems. This is a Mollis-type azalea, known for its generous flower clusters and warm seasonal colour. Mature plants reach around 1.5 to 2m high and wide.
This azalea suits a cottage garden, a woodland-style planting, or a mixed deciduous border. Its spring flowering period makes it a useful companion for other early-season shrubs and bulbs. Plant several together for a massed display, or use a single specimen where it has room to develop its natural shape.
Grow Ilam Apricot Beauty in full sun or part shade, in free-draining, acidic soil with good organic content. Work compost through the planting area and mulch well to protect the shallow roots and retain moisture. Avoid heavy, waterlogged ground, which stresses the roots.
Water regularly through the first summer and during any extended dry spell after that. Trim lightly after flowering to maintain shape. Like all azaleas and rhododendrons, this plant is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten, so consider that in pet-friendly gardens.
Trimming: Trim lightly straight after flowering in late spring to keep the plant tidy and encourage a compact shape. Mollis azaleas flower on old wood, so avoid cutting back hard. Remove any dead, weak, or crossing stems at the same time.
Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent flower clusters by hand to tidy the plant, but leaving them does no harm and the plant will still perform well the following season.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. A light second feed after flowering supports strong new growth. Avoid general-purpose fertilisers high in phosphorus, and do not over-feed.
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist through the growing season, never waterlogged. Water deeply during summer and in any dry spell. A layer of mulch over the root zone helps retain moisture and keeps the shallow roots cool.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale insects, particularly on new growth and leaf undersides. Treat early with a suitable insecticide or horticultural oil to prevent populations from building up.
Disease Management: Ensure free-draining soil and good airflow around the plant to reduce the risk of Phytophthora root rot and powdery mildew. Clear fallen leaves and spent flowers from around the base. Watch for pale swollen leaf galls, a sign of Exobasidium leaf gall; pick off affected growth and bin it rather than composting.
