Azalea Mollis Delectable is a deciduous azalea grown for its large, richly coloured spring flowers. The blooms appear before the new leaves emerge, giving the plant a bold floral display from around September. Mollis azaleas are known for their generous flower trusses and their warm autumn foliage colour, which extends the plant's seasonal interest well beyond spring. Expect a mature size of around 1.5 to 2m high and wide.
This azalea suits a cottage garden, a woodland-style planting, or a mixed shrub border where seasonal change is valued. Plant it in groups to create a massed effect, or use it as a specimen among lower-growing perennials. It pairs well with other deciduous azaleas and spring bulbs.
Grow Azalea Mollis Delectable in dappled shade or morning sun with afternoon shelter. It needs free-draining, acidic soil enriched with organic matter. Mulch around the base to protect the shallow roots and retain moisture. Avoid exposed, hot positions and heavy or waterlogged ground.
Water consistently through the first summer and during dry spells thereafter. Feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas and rhododendrons. Like all azaleas, this plant is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten, so take care in pet households.
Trimming: Trim lightly straight after flowering in late spring. Azaleas flower on old wood, so keep pruning light. Remove dead, weak, or crossing stems and shape gently to maintain an open, even form.
Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. Removing spent trusses by hand tidies the plant and reduces the chance of fungal issues in humid conditions, but leaving them does no harm.
Fertilising: Feed in spring as new growth begins with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. A light second application after flowering supports healthy new growth. Avoid over-fertilising, as the roots are shallow and sensitive.
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Water deeply through summer and in any dry spell. A layer of mulch over the root zone holds moisture and keeps the roots cool.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale insects. Check leaf undersides regularly and treat early with a suitable horticultural oil or spray if numbers build.
Disease Management: Good drainage and airflow are the main defences. Wet or heavy soil encourages Phytophthora root rot. In humid, still conditions powdery mildew can develop on foliage; improve airflow and avoid overhead watering. Check for leaf gall in spring and pick off any pale, swollen growth and bin it. Clear fallen leaves and spent flowers to reduce fungal pressure.
