Azalea Magnifica Alba
Azalea Magnifica Alba is a compact evergreen azalea grown for its single white flowers. The blooms open in spring and cover the plant in a clean, even display. It has a tidy, rounded habit and sits well in sheltered garden beds, borders, and containers. Mature size is typically around 1 to 1.5m high and wide.
This azalea suits a cottage garden, a Japanese-style planting, or a formal border where a composed, orderly look is wanted. Plant several together for a solid mass of white in spring, or use individual plants to brighten a shaded corner. White flowers pair well with soft pink or lavender azaleas nearby for a gentle contrast, or sit cleanly against dark foliage hedges.
Grow Azalea Magnifica Alba in part shade or morning sun with afternoon shade. It needs free-draining, acidic soil enriched with organic matter. Work compost through the bed at planting and apply a generous layer of mulch to keep the shallow roots cool and moist. Avoid exposed, hot positions and waterlogged ground.
Water regularly through the first summer and during dry spells in following seasons. Like all azaleas and rhododendrons, this plant is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten, so take care in households with pets.
Trimming: Trim lightly straight after flowering in late spring to keep the plant compact and well shaped. Azaleas flower on old wood, so avoid cutting back hard. Remove any dead, weak, or crossing stems at the same time.
Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent blooms by hand to tidy the plant after flowering, but leaving them on does no harm.
Fertilising: Feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. A light second application after flowering helps support new growth. Keep rates modest, as the shallow roots are easily stressed by heavy feeding.
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Water deeply through summer and during any dry periods. A layer of mulch over the root zone holds moisture and moderates soil temperature.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale insects. Check the undersides of leaves regularly and treat early with a suitable insecticidal spray or horticultural oil.
Disease Management: Good drainage and open airflow prevent most problems. Wet or heavy soil encourages Phytophthora root rot, which is the main risk for azaleas in poor conditions. In humid, still weather watch for petal blight on open flowers, and remove affected blooms promptly. Clear fallen leaves and spent flowers from around the base to reduce fungal pressure. Sooty mould can appear on honeydew left by sap-sucking insects; control the pest and the mould will clear.
