Azalea Madonna

Azalea Madonna is an evergreen azalea grown for its white hose-in-hose flowers. The hose-in-hose form means each bloom is doubled, with one flower sitting inside another, giving a full, layered look. Flowers appear in spring, typically from September, and cover the plant in a clean, bright display. Madonna grows to around 1 to 1.5m high and wide, making it a manageable size for most gardens.

This azalea suits a cottage garden, a Japanese-style planting, or a shaded woodland border. White-flowered azaleas work well massed in groups for a cohesive look, or planted alongside pink or soft red varieties for contrast. They also perform well in large containers on a sheltered deck or patio.

Grow Madonna in part shade or morning sun with afternoon shade. It prefers free-draining, acidic soil enriched with compost. Mulch around the base to keep the shallow roots cool and retain moisture. Avoid exposed, hot positions and heavy, wet soils.

Trim lightly after flowering and feed with an azalea-specific fertiliser in spring. Water regularly through summer and dry spells. Like all azaleas and rhododendrons, this plant is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten, so take care in pet households.

Trimming: Trim lightly straight after flowering in late spring to keep the plant tidy and compact. Azaleas flower on old wood, so avoid cutting back hard. Remove any dead, weak, or crossing stems at this time.

Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent blooms by hand to tidy the plant after flowering, but leaving them does no harm to the plant.

Fertilising: Feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. A second light feed after flowering supports strong new growth. Avoid over-feeding, as the roots are shallow and sensitive.

Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist through the first summer and during any dry spells. Water deeply rather than lightly and often. Mulch around the base to hold moisture and protect the shallow root zone.

Pest Control: Check plants regularly for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale. Inspect leaf undersides where pests often shelter. Treat early with a suitable horticultural oil or spray before populations build.

Disease Management: Free-draining soil and good airflow prevent most problems. Wet or heavy soil invites Phytophthora root rot, which is the main risk for azaleas in poorly drained sites. Clear fallen leaves regularly to reduce the chance of petal blight and leaf gall. Pick off any pale, swollen leaf galls and bin them rather than composting.
