Azalea Krugerrand

Azalea Krugerrand is a hardy, evergreen shrub celebrated for its vivid orange flowers that appear in abundance from late winter into spring. The brilliant flowering display creates a striking contrast against its dense, dark green foliage, making it a standout feature in mixed borders, foundation plantings, or woodland-style gardens. Growing to about 1-1.2 metres high and wide, its rounded form and vibrant colour suit both traditional and contemporary garden settings.

Plant in partial shade with acidic, free-draining soil that remains evenly moist. Space plants 80-100 cm apart to allow for natural shaping and airflow. Mulching helps conserve soil moisture and suppress weeds while supporting root health year-round.

Trimming: Lightly trim after flowering to maintain a compact shape and encourage bushier growth. Avoid hard pruning, as azaleas flower on old wood.

Deadheading: Remove spent flowers by hand to tidy the plant and prevent seed development, which can sap energy from next season’s flowering.

Fertilising: Use an acid-loving plant fertiliser in early spring and again after flowering. Avoid lime-based products, as azaleas prefer acidic soil conditions.

Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells and establishment. Azaleas have shallow roots, so avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely.

Pest Control: Watch for lace bugs and azalea caterpillars. Yellow stippling or black droppings may indicate infestation-treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if necessary.

Disease Management: Root rot can occur in poorly drained soils-ensure good drainage. Watch for leaf spots or dieback caused by fungal diseases; remove affected parts and apply a fungicide if needed. Maintain good air circulation to reduce disease risk.
