Azalea Komo Kulshan is a compact evergreen azalea with deep pink flowers that lighten towards the centre. The blooms appear in spring, covering the plant in a generous, even display. This azalea has a tidy, rounded habit and reliable colour season after season. Mature plants reach around 0.6 to 0.9m high and wide, making them well suited to smaller spaces and containers.
Komo Kulshan fits naturally into a cottage garden or a Japanese-style planting. It also works well in a mixed shrub border or a shaded courtyard setting. Plant a group together for a solid mass of colour, or use individual plants to brighten a dull corner. The two-tone deep pink blooms pair well with white or soft lavender azaleas nearby.
Grow this azalea in part shade or morning sun with afternoon shade. It prefers free-draining, acidic soil enriched with compost. Mulch the root zone to retain moisture and keep the shallow roots cool. Avoid exposed, dry, or waterlogged positions.
Water regularly through the first summer and during dry spells. Trim lightly after flowering to maintain shape. Like all azaleas and rhododendrons, Komo Kulshan is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten, so take care in pet households.
Trimming: Trim lightly straight after flowering in late spring to keep the plant compact and well shaped. Azaleas flower on old wood, so avoid cutting back hard. Remove any dead, weak, or crossing stems at the same time.
Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent blooms by hand to tidy the plant, but leaving them does no harm and the plant will perform well either way.
Fertilising: Feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. A light second application after flowering supports healthy new growth. Avoid over-feeding, as the shallow roots are sensitive to excess nutrients.
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply through summer and whenever dry spells occur. A layer of mulch helps retain moisture and protects the shallow root system.
Pest Control: Check plants regularly for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale insects. Inspect the undersides of leaves where pests tend to gather first. Treat early with a suitable spray or horticultural oil.
Disease Management: Free-draining soil and good airflow prevent most problems. Wet or heavy soil increases the risk of Phytophthora root rot. Watch for petal blight in humid conditions and clear fallen leaves and spent flowers to reduce fungal pressure.
