Azalea Kiwi Anniversary
Azalea Kiwi Anniversary is a compact, evergreen shrub featuring masses of soft pink, semi-double flowers with delicate frilled edges, appearing in mid to late spring. The lush green foliage provides a year-round backdrop, while the vibrant flowering display adds a splash of seasonal colour to shaded areas.
Ideal for woodland, cottage, and formal gardens, Azalea Kiwi Anniversary is perfect for borders, underplanting, or container growing in sheltered positions. It prefers part shade with acidic, free-draining soil that remains evenly moist. Protect from harsh afternoon sun. Space approximately 60 to 80 cm apart in garden beds.
Forms a rounded, compact shrub reaching around 80 cm to 1 metre high and wide.
Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to shape the plant and encourage bushy growth. Remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches. Avoid heavy pruning into old wood, as azaleas may not reshoot well from it.
Deadheading: Recommended. Pinch off spent flower heads to tidy the plant and direct energy into new growth rather than seed production.
Fertilising: Use a fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants in early spring, just before new growth appears. Repeat feeding after flowering and again in late summer if needed. Avoid overfeeding, which can damage roots and reduce flowering.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells and while the plant is establishing. Azaleas prefer cool, moist, well-draining soil. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
Pest Control: Monitor for lace bugs, aphids and spider mites, especially on the undersides of leaves. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil if infestations occur.
Disease Management: Root rot and petal blight can be issues in poorly drained or humid conditions. Ensure good drainage, avoid overhead watering and remove any affected flowers or leaves promptly. Good airflow helps reduce the risk of fungal diseases.
