Azalea Honey Bunch

Azalea Honey Bunch is a compact evergreen azalea with double blooms in creamy white edged with soft pink. The flowers open in spring and cover the plant in a full, layered display. This azalea holds a tidy rounded form and matures to around 0.6 to 0.9m high and wide, making it well suited to smaller spaces and containers.

Honey Bunch fits naturally into a cottage garden or a Japanese-style planting. It also works well in a mixed shrub border alongside other azaleas in complementary tones. Plant in groups for a soft, layered effect, or use a single plant in a pot on a deck or courtyard. The pale, two-tone blooms pair well with deeper pinks or rich reds for contrast.

Grow this azalea in part shade or morning sun with afternoon shade. It needs free-draining, acidic soil enriched with compost. Mulch well to keep the shallow roots cool and retain moisture. Avoid heavy or waterlogged ground and exposed, hot positions.

Water regularly through the first summer and during dry spells. Feed once in spring with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas and camellias. Like all azaleas and rhododendrons, Honey Bunch is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten, so take care in pet households.

Trimming: Trim lightly immediately after flowering in late spring to maintain a tidy, compact shape. Azaleas flower on old wood, so avoid pruning hard into older stems. Remove any dead or crossing branches as needed.

Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent blooms by hand to tidy the plant after flowering, but leaving them does no harm.

Fertilising: Apply a fertiliser formulated for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons in spring as growth begins. A light second feed after flowering supports healthy new growth. Avoid over-fertilising, as the shallow roots are sensitive.

Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply and regularly through summer and during dry periods. A layer of mulch helps retain moisture and protects the root zone.

Pest Control: Check plants regularly for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale insects. Inspect leaf undersides and treat infestations early with a suitable spray or horticultural oil.

Disease Management: Good drainage and airflow prevent most problems. Avoid wet or heavy soil, which encourages Phytophthora root rot. Clear fallen leaves and spent flowers to reduce the risk of petal blight and fungal issues.
